The city of Liverpool is currently undergoing the greatest changes in city planning since the terrible blitz by the Lutwaffe during World War II. In rebranding itself as a City of Culture a huge area of central Liverpool is now being redeveloped for shopping and housing. Importantly the 42 acre site, a public/private development by Liverpool City Council and Grosvenor Estates, have proposed the inclusion of the largest gated community in Europe.
Overlooked by the Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts, Chavasse Park is the beginning of this remarkable development. Originally a wilderness of city planning, the "Park" is now visioned as bridging the city centre and the waterfront. Adjacent to the location of the original ancient castle, and later the first Liverpool inland dock, Chavasse Park was the site of the Customs House Building which was destroyed during the Blitz and subsequently demolished. The new excavated site will form a four level underground car park. The architecture will subsequently be infilled and grassed forming an open green area.
