"Smudges in gum" or what W.J. Mitchell described as the fusion of "algorithmic and non-algorithmic" processes. Silver halide photography is algorithmic in its formulaic and repeatable approach to picture making. Non algorithmic processes include drawing and other mark makings and are by contrast unconstrained and non formulaic.

The digital picture allows a seemless fusion and for many this releasing of photography from its intellectual prison of verisimiltude, allows it, finally, to become one of the "arts". Personally I have always thought reality far stranger than fiction.
